Gradings
The syllabuses are structured such that for the required grade, there should be no problem in performing the required techniques in order to pass that grade. The resulting marks given by the instructors to the student will be aggregated; a score of less than twenty percent in any discipline could result in an immediate failure for the grading candidate. The candidate will be awarded marks for the following three categories of their Karate.
Kihon (Basic Karate)
Kata (Form)
Kumite(Sparring)
The following marks show how a pass in the grading is achieved.
| 0 - 19% | Failure |
| 20 - 39% | Blue belt intermediate pass |
| 40 - 49% | 3rd Class pass/ Blue belt pass/ Orange belt intermediate |
| 50 - 59% | 2nd Class pass/Orange belt pass |
| 60 - 69% | 1st Class pass |
| 70 - 100% | Pass with Distinction |
Further points to note are:
Pass with distinction may result in a double grade at the discretion of the instructor(s).
An awarded double grade or more promotes the student to the first class of the grade awarded; the student will be liable to the added costs of that grade.
A student may not be awarded a double grade at or after 2nd Kyu.
For 1st Dan and above there are no “Class passes”, a full pass only may be achieved and each candidate will be assessed on their individual merits.
Failed 1st Dan Candidates will be re-examined at a pre-arranged interval on all three of or the pertinent individual aspects of their grading.
The Little Dragons may be assessed on individual aspects of their karate and pass part-gradings at any one attempt. Although this slows the rate at which they progress, it still maintains their sense of achievement and their standards will be the same as older groups within the school.
The minimum training periods stated under each belt, must be in the three-month period immediately preceding the grade being attempted and they are not a cumulative total of lessons attended before attempting that particular grade. This is a tool to ensure all students attend regularly and improve steadily.
Here are the techniques that are to be demonstrated for each belt.
